I was so excited to find a fellow hiker in Assisi willing to go on a 14km hike over Mount Subasio to the town of Spello.
Monday morning we went and grabbed some wine and fruit to put in our backpacks along with our lunches and set out a little before 9am. It was very hot in the sun and the initial portion of the hike was along a switchback road up the mountain to a hermitage.
We stopped and visited the hermitage, where St. Francis used to go to pray, and then continued on the road until we found the trail head. The initial trails were not difficult to follow, but roughly halfway through the hike the markers stopped carrying numbers plus the directions and map became vague and unclear.
We did have to back track at one point but we found our way and stopped at a rock to scramble up for some amazing views and lunch.
We continued through the woods with a ton of spider webs at my face height, and then made our way down the mountain when we thought we met the right trail.
Unfortunately we hadn’t found the right one and came down about 3km too early and had to continue hiking on a road running parallel to the highway. After several no door answers at homemade olive oil signs we finally stumbled upon a vineyard where we tasted wine and olive oil! Then continued our trek to historic Spello. We reached the city walls around 5pm.
We had just enough time to see the gorgeous San Maria de Maggiore church as well as another smaller church. We saw the Roman Forum remains, wandered the streets for a bit stopping at a wine shop, then we got gelato and waited for the train back to Assisi.
Was it fun? Definitely. Do I recommend that hike? Not unless you are experienced with the area, have a good guide, or speak enough Italian to ask for help when you stumble across someone (which was never on the trails and rarely on the road).
In the end we hiked closer to 11miles than 8ish miles and we were both sore the next day but I’m so glad I got to explore some of the mountain and surrounding towns on foot beyond just runs around Assisi.
Mileage – 2.25miles, workout challenge
QOD – There’s no such thing as bad weather, just weak people.
