Huntsville Half Race Recap!!!!

Yesterday I ran the Seven Hills Running Club Huntsville Half at Sam Houston State University! I ran the race in 2:14:24 which is a PERSONAL RECORD! It is only my second half marathon so I’m thrilled to have shaved off over 9 minutes.

The race course was definitely hilly for Texas – and I hadn’t run hills since I left Maryland OOPS – but the hills weaved their way through neighborhoods, past the oldest penitentiary in Texas, and around the campus of Sam Houston State. The course was a loop, which is a love/hate relationship for me, the loop is nice because you can prepare for what is coming but it also can get a little monotonous. Thankfully we only did the loop twice.  As a lover of fall and cold running, I could not have asked for more perfect weather. The rain finished long before the race started and the temps stayed around the comfy upper 50’s.

I was only 1 minute behind schedule to achieve my goal of sub 2:10:00 at the halfway mark, but the hills and a right calf cramp had me struggling to push for the negative split in the last 2 miles. I knew I could still run a sub 2:15:00 and a PR and so I just aimed for that. Being so close this race means the sub 2:10:00 is definitely achievable during my next half.

UP NEXT. Training for the Waco Marathon in January!

No major injuries this race HOORAY!!! However, I am definitely sore in my left hip flexor and have a slightly limited range of motion, but since it is continually feeling better I’m not concerned that it is anything major. I’ll monitor it this week which is a big recovery week for me, especially since my recital is on Friday! And this is the yoga pose goal for this week since I will be doing a lot of yoga this week. I already have a massage scheduled tomorrow so I’m very excited for that.

I will post pictures when I have them uploaded!!

Mileage – Yoga, foam roller, hot bath

QOD – Arriving at one goal is the starting point to another.

I’m Alive – I Promise!!!

I don’t even know how long it has been since I blogged last – but essentially it has been WAY too long. Tomorrow is my first HALF MARATHON of this season!!! I cannot wait to put on that number and feel those pre-race jitters again. I haven’t run a race in 6 months!

Oh – and my recital is in 1 week…holy *@$%!!!! Hence my blogging absence, I have been practicing like crazy and running around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to get all the logistical parts done.

In terms of working out I’ve been going to CrossFit as usual twice a week and tapering my runs, trying to shorten my distances but maintain my speed and intensity. I missed out on my last long run, but since I managed to cross the 10 mile mark in my training I’m feeling pretty good I can run a PR this race. My goal however is to run a sub 2:10:00, which would take over 13 minutes off my first half time.  My season goal is a sub 2:00:00 but I think that is a more logical goal for my March half.

Although race day looks to be rainy I think the temperatures will be really nice! Pre-race I will be doing packet pick-up since I’ll arrive at my friends’ place past packet-pick up time and since I’m staying so close to the starting line I’m pretty excited about the chance to wake up a little later than usual on race day! Here’s a short little article about what to do post-race

Alright, back to homework and practicing. I promise to get back to the swing of things once my recital is over – because then marathon training begins…..pending I make it out of tomorrow’s race alive haha!

Mileage – YOGA!

QOD -A race is a work of art that people can look at and be affected in as many ways they’re capable of understanding.

Fat Days….Everybody Has Them…Right? (Plus a chicken soup recipe and funny site!)

When I found this gem of a photo I had to save it because I knew the day would come when I would feel this way:

Sunday and Monday I felt like serious cans of biscuits…. I felt 10lbs heavier. But the funny thing is that when I stepped on the scale I’d only “gained” 2 lbs AKA some water weight. After a great 5 mile run last night and a good CrossFit workout this morning, I feel much less like a busted can of biscuits.

With the musical, my recital, assistantship, and my first exam in my class looming and occurring all at the same time it’s been a battle to keep ALL the good habits I started the semester with. But I just keep pushing and meal planning (I haven’t missed a week yet!) and training. I’ve kept off almost all the weight I lost in August and September and I have to keep reminding myself that since I’m really only looking at 7-10lbs that I want to lose (part of my summer 2012 regain), it’s going to be very slow going and I’ve still come a very long way from where I started in March of 2010. Some days I have to remind myself of this:

I found this hilarious post today on FitSugar that talks about What People Worry About When Exercising. The clips are hilarious and everyone is SO true!

My lunch for this week is Chicken and Rice Soup. I keep feeling this nagging possibility of a cold and I’m fighting it hard core so why not eat the best cold recipe there is everyday?!

Chicken and Rice Soup (crockpot!)

2 lbs raw Chicken Breast/Tenderloin, cut into 1 inch chunks
4 cups Chicken Stock
2 cups Water
2 Carrots, chopped
3 stalks Celery, chopped
1 handful of Fresh Parsley, chopped
1/2 cup Rice, uncooked
1 teaspoon Salt
1 teaspoon Seasoning Salt
1/2 teaspoon Majoram
Ground Pepper to taste

Throw all the ingredients in a crockpot cook on low for 8 hours! The flavors are so much better than the last soup I made! My rice came out little mushy so I would either throw it in a half hour before serving or cooking it separately and then just mixing it in. Makes roughly 5 servings with 330 calories per serving.

TODAY I’M GETTING A MASSAGE! I swear the woman who I go to works wonders. I had a long intense massage about 2 weeks ago and I started feeling the knots again yesterday so I figured I’d go in for a shorter “tune-up” massage this week and again the week of my recital.

Mileage – CrossFit, Yoga

QOD -Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.

Ironic and wonderful!

Weekend Update!

Today I slept it. It was glorious. I slept in until 8:30 am!!!! I keep feeling the cold waiting to come on and get me and I think sleeping in PLUS a two hour nap today really helped me recharge.

Ben and I went for a 5 mile run this morning when it was actually hot? Today’s weather has been crazy! It is now breezy, chilly perfect running weather. However, this morning, it was humid and 80 degrees. It was not exactly the most pleasant of running weather and we had to stop and get water. I was pretty dehydrated.

Tonight and tomorrow are my last 2 performances with LEGALLY BLONDE! This has been a really fun and great learning experience for me. After spending ages 5-18 on the stage singing and dancing, this was a great first experience playing in a musical pit. The cast has done a great job maintaining their voices and energy for an 11 show run and every audience brings new laughs. If you don’t know the show you can check out some of the music HERE – which is a cool look at the filming of the original Broadway recording. It’s definitely a girly show but it is SO MUCH FUN. I have some killer electric bass parts which have been a blast to play.

I had my first rehearsal with my accompanist, which was very eye opening for me, I have a lot of work to do between now and my recital. But my performance anxiety has been pretty under control since Monday so I’m hoping I’m learning how to manage the stress of the recital.

COUNTDOWNS!

Fall Break (MOM AND DAD VISIT) – 1 week!
Half-Marathon Countdown – 2 weeks!
Recital – 3 weeks!

Mileage – 5 miles

QOD – Tomorrow is another day, and there will be another battle.

Workout Wear

Sorry to my male readers, I don’t really have much advice or commentary on men’s workout wear (except protect your nipples on long runs, that just looks painful)!

Today I made the terrible mistake of wearing a cotton t-shirt to CrossFit. Don’t get me wrong. In the winter or at an indoor gym with air conditioning I’m fine with my cotton tees, however running outside or working out in an open air gym in the muggy Texas weather makes cotton feel like the world’s worst material. By the time our warm up was over I had sweat completely through my shirt.

I do enjoy wearing my race shirts in cooler weather, those shirts are not cotton and super comfy. But during the summer I prefer moisture wicking tank tops. My LuLu top is my favorite workout top ever, but alas I have to add to that collection VERY slowly with my limited budget. I also I have 1 Nike and 1 UnderArmor tank (with built-in bras) that I really like. However, those are also expensive. Has anyone found any workout tops in the broke-grad student budget range that they really like?

When it comes to bottoms, I actually love Champion! I’m a huge fan of the line that is carried at Target! I have 2 pairs of their running capris and 3 of their running skirts. I also have a Nike skirt that I love. I’m a huge fan of running skirts and capris because they don’t ride up and I feel like I chafe MUCH less than in shorts. I also just hate those shorts with the built in underwear, they make me sweat more and almost feel like I’m wearing a diaper some days?

I’m still in the search for the perfect running bra. I also know it’s time to retire some of my sports bras that I’ve ashamedly had for years. One or two for maybe even a decade – SHAME I KNOW.

Today’s workout was brutal with hanging clean squats, burpees, and power jumps at a sprint pace for 4 rounds. But it was good because I think it kicked my legs into gear. They’ve been so stiff from all the sitting in the pit I’ve done for the musical. Last night I managed to squeeze in a run after the show and it was MORE than worth it. I have 17 days until my first half of the season, I can’t totally throw away my taper. Looking forward to a longer run and a nice comfy recovery run this weekend, which is going to be great during some cooler weather!

Mileage – CrossFit, yoga

QOD – No one ever drowned in sweat.

October!!!

I love October. I love pumpkins, football, hockey, fall foods, sweaters, etc. Just like everyone else on the internet it seems (minus Pumpkin Spice Lattes – coffee is GROSS) October 1st – December 31st are easily the 3 best months out of any year. Here’s  pumpkin I picked and carved with my roommate and bass bestie (BEAR!) my FRESHMAN year of college. It shows some of the Halloween decorations in the background too haha. We were allowed to keep the pumpkin in the dorm for awhile too!

BUT this October might be the most crazy busy month of my life. I have:

 – 6 shows left playing in the pit for Legally Blonde (OH MY GOOOODDD)
 – 4 concerts!
 – Recital Hearing
 – Cowboys vs Redskins game/weekend in Dallas with my parents!
 – Rehearsal and a gig with my jazz group
 – Watching/performing in other recitals
 – Exam and rough draft of my paper due
 – Dress rehearsals, classes, ensemble rehearsals, assistantship work, gigs

All this on top of my HALF MARATHON and my RECITAL.

I’m really proud of myself for sticking to my guns and getting up early to run or go to CrossFit during these musical weeks. It’s been so stressful and tiresome some days. So much so that I’ve barely had time to grocery shop, let alone being able to cook. My eating habits being thrown off is a bit of a bummer and I genuinely think it affects my mood, but as long as I get in my work outs I can keep my mental health together.

I had an insane amount of anxiety yesterday performing my Bach Cello Suite for the first time in “public”,  but I managed to get through the entire piece and I feel so much better having the majority of tears, anxiety, and mental exhaustion behind me. I performed again for some of my fellow bassists today and it went SO much better. (By the way, the Baylor bass studio is great and I’m so lucky to have been in 2 amazingly supportive and loving studios so far in my collegiate career)

CrossFit today was rough, we did “midline” which works our core first, and the ab mat sit ups and overhead squats were BRUTAL. I have a run tomorrow and a new recipe to try so hopefully I’ll be back with some more exciting, fitness related words for y’all!

Mileage – CrossFit

QOD – Dum spiro, spero (While I breathe, I hope)
